You can perform a search of the catalogue on the Search page. A search can be conducted in any of the following ways:

Any text:	any word or phrase typed here will be searched for in any text field of the catalogue. The terms are not case sensitive, so Green will find both ‘Green’ and ‘green’.
Reference:	if you know the reference of the document, you can search for it by typing the reference here. A ‘/’ must appear between every level or part of the reference - there must be no spaces or gaps, e.g. DD/2040/1/1 not DD 2040 1/1. Some catalogue entries do not have references. These are sections or series within the catalogue. Individual files or items within these sections or series can be viewed on the Collection Catalogue page. Only individual files or items can be ordered for viewing in the archives search room.
Title:	any word or phrase typed here will be searched for in the title of a catalogue entry.
Date:	if you know the date of the document, you can search for it by typing the date here. The following formats can be searched:

1804-1812	Any date within any of the years 1804 to 1812 inclusive
Feb-Oct 1804	Any date between 1 February and 31 October 1804
Oct 1804, October 1804	Any date in October 1804, i.e. between 1 and 31 October
1 Feb-11 Oct 1804, 1st Feb-11th Oct 1804	Any date between 1 February and 11 October 1804
c 1804, c. 1804 or circa 1804	The year 1804 and ten years either side (i.e. 1794-1814)
19 century, 19th century, 19 cent, 19th cent	Any year between 1800 and 1899 inclusive
Early 19th century	Any year between 1800 and 1839 inclusive
Mid 19th century	Any year between 1830 and 1869 inclusive
Late 19th century	Any year between 1860 and 1899 inclusive
Early 1800s	Any date between 1800 and 1839 inclusive
Late 1800s	Any date between 1860 and 1899 inclusive

Where the date of the document is not known, the letters ‘nd’ will appear. Where a date is inferred or estimated, it will appear in square brackets, e.g. nd [c 1804]

Wildcard search

For variant spelling of words, insert *

Sm*th will find Smith and Smyth

*manton will find Egmanton and Normanton

brew* will find brew, brews, brewing, brewer, brewers etc

Advanced search

You can perform an advanced search using the any text, reference, title and date fields, as on a basic search. You can also search by:

Subject

Click on the Subject link. In the pop-up menu type the subject you are interested in; or type * to obtain a list of all subjects before clicking on the Lookup button. From the list click on your chosen subject.

A box will appear to the left hand side of the subject featuring one of the following:-

Term: This is a subject in the catalogue on which you can search. Click on Term to select this entry. If you cannot click on Term, see USE, below.

BT: ‘Broad Term’. This is a more general subject than the one for which you have searched. Click on BT to investigate this more general term.

NT: ‘Narrow Term’. This is one (of several) subject(s) which is more specific than the one for which you have searched. Click on NT to investigate this more specific term.

RT: ‘Related Term’. This is an alternative subject which is similar to the one for which you have searched. Click on RT to investigate this alternative term.

USE: This is an alternative term for the one which you have searched. The term which you have searched for is not valid, and so this alternative can be used instead. Click on USE to select this term.

When you have found your chosen entry, click on Term. The subject will appear in the table on the Advanced search page. To conduct a search, click on Search.

Place

Click on the Place link. In the pop-up menu type the place you are interested in; or type * to obtain a list of all places before clicking on the Lookup button.

From the list identify the place you are interested in and click on Select to the left of the entry. The code for this place will appear in the table on the Advanced search page. To conduct a search, click on Search.

Once you have conducted a search and obtained your results, you can refine the search by clicking on the Advanced search button again. Your search terms will not appear on this page, but they will have been remembered. Additional terms can now be entered in the fields, and the search refined by clicking on the following buttons:

Widen:	find additional records for this new term
Narrow:	limit your current results to only those containing this new term
Exclude:	remove current results containing this new term

The following options are also available:

Word options: Phrase	click on the circle to find records containing this phrase
Word options: And	click on the circle to find records containing BOTH words in any one field
Word options: Or	click on the circle to find records containing EITHER word in any one field
Field options: And	click on the circle to find records containing BOTH words in more than one field
Field options: Or	click on the circle to find records containing EITHER word in more than one field
